Abstract : Technology brings many new features to the process control and automation field, which were previously difficult or costly to implement in traditional control systems, such as remote accessibility to the plant, information sharing, and software standardization. The fiber optic and SDH technology, have huge capacity facility and fastest and more reliability in all its application. To improve any system must be use best communication media valuable in a market. In this thesis, we study and analysis Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and comparing the different between other communication media in utility power plant like Power Line Carrier (PLC) and Pilot Cable. SCADA systems are typically distributed in nature and are more suitable for this investigation than other types of control systems. First, we provide an overview of what is currently being done to implement SCADA systems and compare them to the traditional SCADA systems. Then we discuss the latest technologies and analyze their uses in industrial automation. Finally, we evaluate how certain SDH technologies, can improve SCADA systems.
